The Durango High School boys soccer team won its sixth consecutive match Thursday in a 5-0 thumping of Aztec on the road in New Mexico.
The Demons (10-1, 4-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) got going early with a goal in the sixth minute and did not let go of their grip. Durango continued to create chances in the half but would only come away with a 1-0 halftime lead.
Durango’s potent offense awoke in the second half with four goals including a pair of quick strikes in the 41st and 45th minutes.
In addition to the win streak, it was freshman Levi Larson’s fourth shutout of the season and the fifth road win on the year. Larson made two saves.
Logan Fullington scored Durango’s first goal with an assist from Gavin Deffenbaugh. Lance Townsend scored the team’s first two goals of the second half. The first was assisted by Aiden Araujo, and the second came from Fullington.
In the 54th minute, Ian Mattox scored with an assist from Renseler Beasley. Fullington added his second goal in the 55th minute with an assist from Townsend.
Durango will take on rival Montrose (5-5, 2-1 SWL) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Demons have four league games to play and are in pursuit of the league title and a top-four seed in the state tournament. DHS is currently ranked No. 3 in the Colorado High School Activities Association poll, and the team entered the day sixth in the RPI rankings, which are used to determine playoff seeding.
