Washington
OAK HARBOR, Wash. – The 20-year-old man suspected of killing five people with a rifle at a Macy’s makeup counter had a string of run-ins with the law in recent years, including charges he assaulted his stepfather, and was described by a neighbor as so “creepy, rude and obnoxious” that she kept a Taser by her front door.
As investigators tried to piece together information on Arcan Cetin, who was arrested Saturday evening after a nearly 24-hour manhunt, a picture emerged of a troubled young man. Court records show more than a half-dozen criminal cases in Island County alone since 2013.
Authorities said the gunman in the attack at the Cascade Mall in Burlington opened fire in the department store's cosmetics department Friday night, killing a man and four females ranging from a teenager to a senior citizen. The killer then fled.
New York
NORTH COLLINS, N.Y. – Officials say three people have been killed following an air collision and crash of two small planes just south of Buffalo, New York.
The Federal Aviation Administration says the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. Sunday in North Collins, New York. One of the planes was a Cessna 120; the other was a Piper PA-28.
Erie County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Scott Zylka says two people were on one plane, and one person on the other. He declined to give additional specifics.
Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria – At least 26 civilians were killed in government airstrikes in Aleppo, said Syrian activists on Sunday. The airstrike came as the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on spiraling violence in Syria but deep divisions between Russia and Western powers prevented any action.
The United States, Britain and France, who called the emergency meeting, heaped blame on Moscow for supporting the Syrian offensive which U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura called one of the worst of the 5½-year war.
When Syria’s U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja’afari was called to speak in the council, the ambassadors of the three Western powers walked out in protest.
Sweden
STOCKHOLM – Swedish police say four people have been wounded in a shooting in Malmo, the country’s third-largest city.
The Expressen newspaper reported that gunmen on motor scooters opened fire Sunday evening on a car they had been chasing through a neighborhood in southern Malmo.
Police confirmed four people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds and that the gunmen were believed to have fled the scene on motor scooters. The victims’ conditions weren't immediately clear.
Like Sweden’s other major cities, Malmo has seen a rise in gun violence in the past decade, often connected to feuds between rival gangs.
