Not bad for a guy who didn’t know he was going to start until late last week.
Fort Lewis College quarterback Max Baiz earned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week accolades after leading the Skyhawks to a 38-28 win over Western New Mexico on Saturday.
Baiz completed 15-of-27 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns and ran 15 times for 88 yards and another touchdown for the Skyhawks (2-2, 1-1 RMAC) in relief of the injured Jordan Doyle.
Perhaps his biggest contributions came on a final, game-clinching drive in the fourth quarter with FLC clinging to a 31-28 lead. Baiz kept a drive alive on third-and-14 with a 31-yard scramble deep into Mustangs’ territory. A few plays later, he found Aaron Holt for his third touchdown pass to all but put the game away.
Colorado School of Mines kicker Avery Llewellyn earned the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week award for his performance in the Orediggers’ 30-10 win over New Mexico Highlands. The Durango High School alumnus was 3-for-3 on field goals, connecting from 34, 35 and 23 yards while making all three of his extra points. He also averaged 48.3 yards on three punts for Mines (3-1, 2-0 RMAC).
Llewellyn’s teammate, linebacker Tyler Denson, picked off two passes and had 16 tackles for CSM to earn the week’s top defensive honors.
FLC will head to Pueblo on Saturday to take on No. 5 CSU-Pueblo.
