Until the spring, FLC falls back on improvement

Skyhawks’ men’s golf finishes 8th of 10 at the RMAC Event No. 2 in Pueblo

After a last-place finish at the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference golf event played on its home course at Hillcrest Golf Club, the Fort Lewis College men’s golf team had nowhere to go but up.

The Skyhawks improved to an eighth-place finish out of 10 teams at the RMAC Event No. 2 on Tuesday at Walking Stick in Pueblo.

FLC battled an omnidirectional wind Day 1 and the cold Day 2 to shoot a third-round 308 to finish with a team score of 928, 76 strokes over par.

Colorado School of Mines won the event by shooting a 21-over 873.

Dillon Washburn tied for 32nd place with a 230 to clinch the Skyhawks’ best finish.

Josh Woodworth shot a 231 to tie for 36th, Bryan Schlichter a 235 for 43rd, Morgan Miller a 236 for 44th and Lucas Laudick a 239 to tie for 50th.

“It’s the same old story,” FLC men’s golf head coach Bud Andersen said. “We’re really close; they’re just not making their putts.”

Colorado Mines’ Jordan Arndt finished first as an individual with a 2-under 211.

The Skyhawks are finished with the fall portion of their season and next will compete March 31 at the Dr. Troy Bledsoe Skyhawk Classic Club Shootout in Palm Springs, Calif.

“I’ve got a game plan to figure that out,” Andersen said of the Skyhawks’ putting. “I think, here, our greens are so pure and green at Hillcrest ... which is a lot different than what we putt on. I think we’re just overreading the greens.

“We’re striking the ball well; we’re right there with everybody else there. We just need to come up with a new game plan for out putting.”
