Dear Durango,
From someone who fell in love with the area for a beautifully balanced combination of historically preserved township as well as bustling tourist-resort destination, I feel like we as a community should take a deep breath and remind ourselves of how much goes into maintaining this strange partnership.
From a modern perspective of international marketing plans that bring people into our region to enjoy everything the Four Corners has to offer, to maintaining and actively running historical businesses like ranching and the train, we are truly an outstanding place. We are all directly affected by the fantastic returns of all of these systems working together and, unfortunately, the losses when they occur. From poor economic years to devastating fires, regardless of who carries the blame, we are all in this together and just as we all deserve understanding as people from our peers, our businesses need the same.
Without the railroad, our community would not be what it is today. We’d be here, but we need to all realize how much would be different, and accept the losses with the gains, especially when the gains outweigh the losses. We wouldn’t appreciate the good times without the bad, after all!
Thanks for being a fantastic place to live, Durango.
