Boston bombing survivor killed in Dubai car crash

BOSTON – A college student who survived serious injuries in the Boston Marathon bombing was killed in a car accident in Dubai over the weekend, a spokesman for Northeastern University said Monday.

Victoria McGrath was killed Sunday, along with another Northeastern student, Priscilla Perez Torres, the Boston school confirmed.

McGrath and Torres were on a personal trip and not studying abroad.

McGrath, 23, received severe shrapnel injuries to her left leg from the first of two bombs placed near the marathon finish line on April 15, 2013.

Chinese Woman died trapped in an elevator

In China, a woman apparently starved to death during a month stranded on an elevator by allegedly negligent workers.

The Associated Press and other outlets reported that the corpse of a 43-year-old woman was found in an elevator in an apartment building in Xi’an, a city of more than 8 million people about 700 miles southeast of Beijing. Authorities identified her only by her surname, Wu, according to the Los Angeles Times; her hands were reportedly mangled by her attempts to escape the elevator.

Power to the elevator was cut on Jan. 30 when a problem with it was reported. Workers, however, did not return until March 1, when they found the corpse. Police said their gross negligence resulted in involuntary manslaughter. The L.A. Times noted that workers had “shouted” to see if anyone was inside without looking themselves.

“The paramedics told us that when they found the body, her hand had already begun to deform,” a resident said of the woman, who reportedly lived alone. “There were markings all over the inside of the elevator, it’s just too horrible.”

Idaho pastor shot after praying with Ted Cruz

On Saturday, pastor Tim Remington put his arm around Ted Cruz and delivered a rousing invocation at a campaign rally in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Now, Remington is on the receiving end of prayers after being shot in the skull and back after his Sunday sermon. Remington is currently at an area hospital. At last report, he was listed as stable.

Early Monday morning, authorities identified a suspect in the shooting: a 30-year-old local man and former Marine named Kyle Andrew Odom. As authorities launched a manhunt for Odom, questions remained over a possible motive, particularly whether the shooting was in any way related to Remington’s appearance with Cruz roughly 24 hours earlier.

Some members of Remington’s Altar Church speculated that the shooting might have stemmed from the pastor’s efforts to help drug addicts.

SCOTUS overturns ruling against lesbian adoption

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Monday overturned an Alabama Supreme Court ruling that said the state should not recognize a lesbian mother’s adoption of three children in neighboring Georgia.

The court overturned the decision without scheduling the case for oral arguments and full briefing. It said the Alabama high court’s decision ignored long-standing precedent that state courts must recognize legitimate rulings by courts in other states.

The Alabama high court said Georgia courts violated their own state laws in granting the adoptions of the children the woman shared with her former partner, and thus she did not deserve custody or even visitation with the children.
