Nature Studies announces programs

Durango Nature Studies will host these programs:

Weekly Wee Walk Abouts, preschool nature walks, will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays through June 26 at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave. The cost is $5 per child; free for members.

A bird walk will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at For the Birds. The walk is free, but donations will be accepted.

Kids’ River Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Nature Center. The event is open to children ages 8 to 12. The cost is $20 for members and summer campers, and $30 for nonmembers

A fly-fishing workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon June 22 at the Nature Center. The cost is $10 for nonmembers; free for members.

A full-moon hike under the Strawberry Moon will take place from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. June 23 at the Burnt Timber Trailhead. The hike is free for members, and $10 for nonmembers.

The Nature Center is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 26. The center is free for members and children 12 and younger, and $5 for nonmembers.

Free backpacking trip to be offered

San Juan Mountains Association, in partnership with San Juan National Forest, will offer a free backpacking trip June 29 and 30.

Interpretive guide MK Thompson will lead the trip over Sharkstooth Pass and into Bear Creek Valley in the La Plata Mountains west of Durango. There will be optional side trips to explore nearby peaks and lakes.

An informational meeting will precede the trip. Space is limited. To reserve a space, call 759-9113 or email MK@sjma.org.

Fly-fishing class available for youths

Durango Parks and Recreation will offer a fly-fishing class for youths entering fourth through seventh grades from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. June 24 to 26 at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

The class will conclude with a fishing field trip from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 27. The cost is $58.

Defensive pistol class offered for women

The Bayfield Lions Club and Wolverine School of Personal Safety will host a ladies-only basic defensive pistol class from 9 a.m. to noon June 22 at the Bayfield Lions Club/Art Davis Range on County Road 223.

Hearing and eye protection will be necessary; sunglasses are acceptable. The range will be closed to all other shooting during this event. Women of any experience are welcome. Participants should bring handguns and ammunition.

Basic safety and shooting skills will be taught. An experienced instructor and assistants will run the class and be available to answer questions. Targets will be provided, and bottled water will be available.

The class is free, but donations will be accepted for the Bayfield Lions Club.
