Interstate 70 in western Colorado is back open after a rock slide sent boulders the size of big SUVs tumbling down on part of the highway.
State transportation officials opened both eastbound lanes in Glenwood Canyon at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, and one westbound lane was opened a couple of hours later.
The slide happened early Tuesday along an elevated part of the highway where the westbound lanes are stacked on top of the eastbound lanes. A spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation, Tracy Trulove, says the rocks – three the size of Suburbans – landed on the westbound lanes but none made it down to the eastbound lanes.
Drivers faced a long detour to get around the closure as crews brought down more rocks to prevent another rockslide.
A large slide in the canyon in February 2016 fully closed the highway for nearly a week.
