San Juan Basin Public Health to host summit about suicide prevention

San Juan Basin Public Health will host the Suicide Prevention Community Summit from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at Miller Middle School, 2608 Junction St., in an effort to build support for suicide prevention and strengthen a local support system for people in need.

The community-based event aims to engage individuals, families, organizations and businesses. Rocky Mountain Psychological Association president-elect Dr. Susan Becker will give a presentation called “Brief Suicide Intervention Training.” Breakout sessions for specific groups will be held, including women, men, parents of elementary-aged children, seniors, LGBT youth, preteens and teens.

Local-support organizations will provide resources and give participants opportunities to share ideas, make suggestions and ask questions during a “feedback gallery walk.”

Activities for children 6 and older will be provided by the Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County. Spanish-language interpreters will be available.

Light snacks will be offered.
