50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Breen News: “Our very best wishes go to Danny Holgate, son of Bishop Merle Holgate, who got his hand caught in the drill and cut off two fingers and split the bone in one. The fingers were sewed back on and Danny is recuperating at home.”
25 years ago: “Durango’s proposed budget for 1989 shows a city in lean years continuing to live off its fat years. The budget drawn up by City Manager Bob Ledger and staff members calls for $11.53 million in total expenditures, less than a 1 percent increase from the $11.43 million being spent in 1988. But revenues are forecast at $11.03 million, compared to $10.95 million this year, so the city will continue to spend more than it take sin.”
