Colorado Lightning Safety Awareness Week, declared by Governor John Hickenlooper, will be observed Monday through Saturday.
Residents are encouraged to be aware of lightning and learn how to stay safe when it strikes the ground, which happens more than 500,000 times each year in Colorado. Lightning also causes about half of the year’s wildfires in the state.
Each day of the week is paired with a lightning safety topic, including: a lightning overview for Colorado, the science of lightning, outdoor lightning risk reduction, indoor lightning safety, lightning medical issues for survivors, and lightning and wildfires.
