Mesa Verde National Park will implement a prescribed fire from Jan. 3 to Jan. 27 within the Chapin Mesa area, weather permitting.
The controlled fire will be conducted to dispose of material created during fuel-reduction projects last summer.
The burn will be 1 acre, and fuels will include gamble oak, piñon and juniper. Burning at this time of year should produce low intensity fire behavior while achieving desired goals.
Ignition operations should take one day, but the area may produce smoke for several days afterward.
Visitors to Mesa Verde may see smoke in the southwestern part of the park during these activities. For more information about the health risks of smoke inhalation, visit http://bit.ly/2h18Iva.
For more about the prescribed burn, call Keith Krause, Mesa Verde assistant fire management officer, at 529-5062.
