9-R superintendent to host round table
Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger will host a round table to discuss 9-R’s current academic programs, and help determine how the district should best prioritize spending from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at Needham Elementary School.
Participants should bring questions, concerns and priorities so the district can protect the programs deemed most important.
Native American advisory group to meet today
The Title VII Native American Education Parent Advisory will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at Durango High School in Room No. 27.

New 9-R academic calendar now available for viewing
The Durango School District 9-R School Board recently approved the academic calendar for the 2014-15 school year.
To view the new calendar, visit durangoschools.org. Early release days are still to be determined, as are the dates for parent/teacher conferences. An update to the website will be made as soon as those dates have been selected.
Financial aid will be topic of presentation at FLC
The Fort Lewis College Office of Financial Aid will present “Financial Aid 101: How to Pay for College” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango High School library.
The free financial-aid presentation will have information about how to submit the Free Application for Federal Aid and about the different types of financial aid available.
There also will be an opportunity to ask questions about the financial-aid process.
Florida Mesa Elementary to host food, mitten drives
Florida Mesa Elementary is collecting food items for the Durango Food Bank and items for the hat and mitten tree for Project Merry Christmas.
Items can be donated at the school.
Local FLC art majors to host exhibit at college
These local Fort Lewis College senior-level art majors will exhibit their creations in the main gallery of the Art Building from Wednesday to Dec. 21:
Hari Baumbach, of Durango, will display “Body Painting Festival Website Design,” digital media; “Body Painting Festival Identity & App Design,” digital media; and “Out of Sight, Out of Mind? Think Again,” digital media.
Kacie Bernhardt, of Durango, will display “Coleman Coffeemaker Ad,” digital media.
Aaron Blue, of Durango, will display “Geodesic Box,” porcelain with cone 6 underglaze; “Industrialized Nature,” stoneware cone 10; and “Endless Autumn,” steel and copper.
Cassidy Cabot, of Bayfield, will display “Untitled,” paint, coffee and charcoal; “Taste,” paint and dental plaster; and “Colorado,” paint.
Ben Dalphonse, of Durango, will display “Gorax #3,” lithograph print; “Warning Sign,” lithograph print; and “Nixon Watch Ad Campaign,” digital media.
Cody Young, of Bayfield, will display “Life is a Blur,” digital media; “Democratic and Political Ignorance,” digital media; and “Digital Painting/Logo Design,” digital media.
The works on display show advanced projects in media ranging from graphic design to fine art and textiles. Participating students design, curate and install the exhibition.
FLC composition classes to have displays
Fort Lewis College’s Composition 250 (Inquiry and Writing), Composition 252 (Professional and Technical Writing) and Composition 253 (Action Research) classes will celebrate student writing from 3:20 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Conference displays will be held from 3:20 to 6:30 p.m. in the Cascade, Delores and La Plata rooms.
Visual displays will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Colorado and Student Union Ballroom.
The event will feature students’ displays, presentations and activities that represent the research and writing they have accomplished this semester.
Fifth-graders can learn financial literacy Thursday
Know Your Dough, Inc., a nonprofit that provides financial literacy for local youth will offer “More Than Money” a financial literacy program for fifth-graders from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12 and 19 at the Boys & Girls Club, 2750 Main Ave.

Financial program seeking volunteers with experience
Know Your Dough Inc., a nonprofit that provides financial literacy for local youth, is looking for volunteers in the financial services industry to help deliver Junior Achievement’s “Personal Finance” program to the junior class at Durango High School on Jan. 9. Thirteen volunteers are needed.

Computer, networking classes will be available
Cisco networking and programming classes will be offered beginning in January at Southwest Colorado Community College.
The computer information systems program will prepare students for careers in computer science and computer networking.
The classes will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Durango campus, 701 Camino del Rio.
Cisco Network Associate I will run from Jan. 13 through March 8, and Cisco Network Associate II from March 10 through May 10.
The Introduction to Programming class will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 13 to May 10. The online course materials offer features such as network simulation exercises, labs and assessments that provide remedial feedback to help reinforce important concepts.
Certified instructor Stan Eubanks will provide hands-on support in equipped labs. He has 10 years of experience teaching Cisco networking. The college plans to partner with local businesses to identify internship and career opportunities for graduates.

Mountain Middle School to host science exhibit
Mountain Middle School’s eighth-grade math/science class will exhibit scale models of the solar system from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school, 108 W. 31st St., and the Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.
The school will showcase the semester theme “Our Place in Space,” which conceptually places the sun at Mountain Middle School and Pluto in Pagosa Springs with students calculating the scale distances and diameters of planets accordingly.
A gallery walk will showcase the first semester science curriculum while simultaneously portraying scale models of the solar system.
eSchool accepting enrollments for spring
The Southwest Colorado eSchool is accepting enrollments from regional students for the spring 2014 semester.
Students enroll for full-time study and can earn an eSchool diploma. Students also may consult with their current school counselor if they are interested in a blended learning model involving both face-to-face and online coursework.
The eSchool is a public online school serving seventh- to 12th-graders. Enrollments are open to students from the nine districts of Southwest Colorado, spanning Dove Creek to Pagosa Springs. The school is a service of the San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
The school will host an informational session at 5 p.m. Dec. 11 in the Durango Learning Center on the third floor of the Durango School District 9-R Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St.

Columbine Christian School to stage musical performance
Columbine Christian School, 1775 Florida Road, will host “The Night Shift Before Christmas,” a Christmas musical performed by second- to eighth-grade students.
The show takes place at the Falafel House as the town of Bethlehem witnesses the birth of the Messiah.
Showtimes will be 11 a.m. Dec. 14 and 6 p.m. Dec. 18. Each show also will include “The Itty Bitty Christmas Pageant” performed by the prekindergarten through first-graders. Afterward, there will be a potluck reception. Admission is free.
The school is a private Christian school, which welcomes students from all faith backgrounds, and specializes in outdoor education and individualized learning.
