100 years ago: “Charley Naeglin offered the city council $35 for the old lumber and iron roofing on the old power plant near the river with the consideration that he would also tear down and remove the unsightly structure. His offer was accepted as the best of two bids received for the work.”

75 years ago: “James Stephens, 73, of Mancos, convicted slayer of Lynn Dean, Mancos marshal, was denied his appeal for a new trial and was sentenced to die in the state’s lethal gas chamber during the week of April 13-20.”

50 years ago: “Registration for winter trimester classes at Fort Lewis College in Durango shows signs of once again exceeding comparable 1963-64 enrollment figures, according to preliminary information.”

25 years ago: “Several agencies, businesses and individuals gathered for the dedication of a plaque commemorating the Dominguez-Escalante expedition and to remember Louis L’Amour, an author who lived part-time in La Plata County before his death in 1988. ... The L’Amour family paid for the plaque and its installation. The expedition, composed of Fathers Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante and eight companions, passed through this area in August 1776 looking for a route to link missions in New Mexico with California.”
