Ignacio man found dead in creek from possible drowning

Man went for a walk at night, didn’t return to camp

An Ignacio man appears to have drowned in a creek this week near town limits.

Investigators believe Richard Landmark, 53, was living as a homeless man when he became intoxicated, went for a walk in the dark and fell into Rock Creek, said La Plata County Corner Jann Smith.

The death occurred late Monday or early Tuesday. He was found about 7 a.m. Tuesday by a friend who had been camping with him near the 1000 block of Goddard Avenue in Ignacio.

The friend said he knew Landmark went for a walk, but he thought he returned to his camp. It was not until the next morning that the friend found Landmark in the creek, Smith said.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday; no foul play is suspected, Smith said. A toxicology report is expected to take several weeks.
