Fort Lewis College softball has senior day spoiled

Fort Lewis wraps up season with losses to Chadron State

The Fort Lewis College softball season came to a disappointing end Sunday.

The Skyhawks had the tough task of bouncing back from a Saturday doubleheader in which they were outscored by Chadron State 25-2 in two losses, but dropped the last two games of the season 5-4 and 9-2 Sunday.

Other than Angelique Elemen’s team-leading 16th home run, there wasn’t much to cheer about in the first two games or a four-game weekend set at Aztec Tiger Sports Complex in Aztec, New Mexico.

Fort Lewis (6-43, 5-35 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) had a better showing Sunday on senior day. The Skyhawks nearly pulled off the game one win before they said goodbye to seniors Olivia Goldberg, Mandy Owens, Megan Redd, Adriana Rosthenhausler and Tehenia Telliano.

Elemen blasted another home run to get the Skyhawks on the scoreboard and Mandy Owens added a three-run shot in the fourth that gave FLC a 4-3 lead. The Eagles came back with two runs in the fifth inning to grab the lead and the Skyhawks couldn’t answer.

Elemen finished 2-for-3 to lead the Fort Lewis offense and Kelly Decker threw seven innings in the circle in the FLC loss.

The final game of the season got off to a rough start for the Skyhawks and never improved.

Chadron State score three runs in the first inning off of Goldberg, but the senior settled in nicely after that. The Skyhawks pulled back to within one run in the fourth inning after Owens and Rosthenhausler singles drove in a pair of runs.

The Eagles (29-23, 25-14 RMAC) finished strong with a run in the fifth and sixth innings before taking complete control with a four-run seventh.
