Devin Schreiner stabilized himself Sunday in the final round of the Colorado Open.
The Durango High School graduate and former Fort Lewis College golfer shot a 3-over 74 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver to finish in a tie for 18th place with four other men.
He had five bogeys against just two birdies in the final round.
“I didn’t strike the ball very well today,” Schreiner said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “I didn’t hit it in the right spots, and my putter was not there. I lost the speed of the greens a little bit.”
Schreiner, the son of Kipp and Tammy Schreiner, led the tournament after the first two days but fell significantly Saturday and Sunday.
He finished at 1-under for the tournament.
Finishing in the top 30 of the event grants Schreiner an exemption for the next two years, meaning he won’t have to play in qualifying tournaments.
“I think it’s going to be huge for me, because now I understand a little bit better that I don’t have to shoot a 65 every time,” Schreiner said. “I think I was under the assumption that I needed to go low every day to win. Judging by what won, if I could have played stead the last two days, I would have been right there.”
Ian Davis of Edmond, Oklahoma, fired a 3-under 67 in the final round to clinch the title at 14 under.
Brandon Hagy of Westlake Village, California, was second at 9 under.
The Rocky Mountain Open from August 15-27 in Grand Junction is up next for Schreiner, and he has several other tournaments lined up before the summer ends.
