Darrick Robinson has been promoted to superintendent of system operations at La Plata Electric Association.
In his new position, Robinson will oversee the dispatch team as well as LPEA’s electronics division. Robinson has been a part of LPEA’s dispatch team since 2008.

Creature Comforts featured in magazine
Creature Comforts – Durango’s locally owned, independent pet store – was recently featured in Pet Product News International, a pet industry trade magazine.
The article, “Large and In Charge,” discusses merchandising large items effectively and features five photos from Creature Comforts – one photo appearing on the cover of the magazine.

La Plata Electric launches new app
La Plata Electric Association now has an app allowing members to connect to their accounts from any electronic device that accepts applications.
LPEA has upgraded its electronic services with the SmartHub, an online program that enables members to review their electricity usage, pay bills and more from their desktop or laptop computers. The SmartHub app allows members to manage all aspects of their LPEA account from their smartphones (both iPhones and Androids) as well as tablets.
LPEA members must first establish an online account at www.lpea.coop and create a secure password. Then visit the App Store via phone and/or tablet and search for SmartHub. The program will ask the member to identify LPEA and request the user identification and password.
Fair-wage proponent receives award, grant
Maureen Maliszewski has been chosen to receive the “Social Justice Service Award” from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee for her work with Thrive! Coalition for a living wage.
A $500 grant was received to support Thrive’s mission to enhance the quality of life in La Plata County through fair and just wages for all.
Smart Enterprises passes safety audit
Smart Enterprises of Durango recently passed an onsite random safety audit by the Auto Glass Safety Council by undergoing a third-party validation process required by all registered members of the council.
The council is a nonprofit dedicated to the safe replacement of auto glass. It is responsible for North America’s only auto-glass replacement standard: the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard. Registered members endure random, periodic third-party inspections of the company, personnel and procedures.
During an AGSC validation, independent third-party evaluators verify that a company’s actions and answers coincide with the AGRSS Standard and the company’s adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.

Business exit strategy workshop to be held
The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center in conjunction with local area business partners will sponsor a “Business Exit Strategy Workshop” from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Education Business Hall at Fort Lewis College.
People will learn the basics of exit strategy from presenters David Buslee, certified business transition expert with B2B CFO; Stephen Pease, a certified financial planner with Professional and Investment Advisor Representative and adviser with Oxford Asset Management; and Charles Spence, partner with the law firm Maynes, Bradford, Shipps & Sheftel.
Topics will include: What issues will you confront?; Planning for and transitioning into retirement; Estate planning in 2014 and beyond; Structuring your portfolio; Sustainable portfolio withdrawal rates; and Optimization of life benefits to reduce tax burdens.

Workers’ compensation to be discussed
The Durango Chamber of Commerce will host a Lunch & Learn titled “Worker’s Compensation” at noon Sept. 24 at the First National Bank of Durango, 259 W. Ninth St.
The event will be presented by Mary Frazer with Mountain West Insurance & Financial Services, LLC. The program will explain how workers’ compensation premiums are calculated, the variables that affect premiums and tools to implement to manage and mitigate overall costs.
This presentation is best suited for office managers, chief financial officers and business owners who manage workers’ compensation and risk-management programs. The cost is $10 for members and $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required.
