Bacon on the Balcony
Their presence on the Durango funk scene has been growing steadily since forming in 2012, and their sizzling sounds just might be more delicious than the savory meat that inspired the band’s name.
The Durango band Bacon brings its filthy-dirty funk and ska to the Balcony Backstage with a 10 p.m. show Friday along with guest guitarist, Durango native and FLC grad Jamie Olinger.
The band, made up of Chris Ross (trumpet), Jeff Nelson (guitar), Ryan Baker (tenor sax), Zach Stevenson (bass) and Larry Craig (drums) will mix original tunes, jammy improv and cover interpretations of funk greats like Maceo Parker, Groove Collective, Lettuce, Skatalites and even Michael Jackson, Ross said.
The show has no cover, and you might find yourself up dancing and grooving, whether you like it or not.
Ragtime and nostalgia at the Diamond Belle
If you’ve got a holiday-weekend out-of-towner in tow (or are one yourself), or if you’re just up for some good ol‘ nostalgia, the Diamond Belle Saloon is the place, with its Wild West decor and ethos, barkeeps and waitresses in period dress and maybe a hint of 19th century gun smoke still in the curtains and floral-patterned carpet. It’s also the last weekend to catch Lacey Black’s ragtime piano.
A summer ragtime fixture at Grumpy’s Saloon in Silverton for more than 15 years, Black’s yearly string of nights at the Diamond Belle ends Wednesday. Until then, she’ll play nightly from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m., except on Sunday. Black mixes ragtime standards with some country and western favorites and might even pianify requests from the audience.
A singer-songwriter beyond her ragtime gigs, Black will be playing at Foxfire Farms Sept. 11, including original songs from her upcoming digital EP release.

Another helping of live comedy improv
Get ready for another round of wacky shenanigans, unexpected associations, cackle-worthy comedy, ludicrous narratives and all-around whimsy as the Durango improv troupe Durango Dot Comedy fires up another offering at the Durango Arts Center.
The eight-person group (nine, if you count the lighting and sound person) will perform its two-hour show starting at 8 p.m. Friday. Doors open at 7:30, and Ska draws are $2 (alcohol and comedy tend to go well together, if you hadn’t heard). Admission is $10.
The group, which will also perform at the Sunflower Theatre in Cortez on Sept. 25, is in its 14th year performing “Whose Line Is It Anyway”-style comedy.
