Wolverines’ Kennedy jumps a personal-best to fourth

Squeezing into the top 10 became routine for the Bayfield High School track and field team on the final day of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A State Championships on Saturday in Lakewood.

The Wolverines finished eighth in the boys meet with 26 points and 11th on the girl side with 27.

“That’s a pretty nice accomplishment for those kids,” BHS head coach Sherry Kimball said. “We medaled every single day, really proud of them.”

The Classical Academy won both 3A team titles with 103 points on the boys side and 111 on the girls.

Conner Kennedy, a BHS junior, balanced two jumping events masterfully with his later relay leg. He finished fourth in the boys high jump at a personal-record 6 feet and took 11th in the long jump at 18-10.5.

“That’s a really hard thing to do,” Kimball said. “It kind of put a damper on his high jump, but he still placed fourth and had a good day.”

Jessica Cusick found her way into the top 10 for a second consecutive day with a ninth-place finish in the girls 400-meter dash. She ran the race in 1 minute, 1.28 seconds, improving five places from her 14th seed to start the event.

Eva-Lou Edwards couldn’t complete the distance-running double. She finished sixth in the girls 1,600-meter run in a school-record 5:18.12 after winning her title defense in the 3,200 on Thursday at Jefferson County Stadium.

Edwards will close her high school career with four total state championships across cross country and track and field. She played in a state tennis tournament for Durango High School, too.

“We were really proud of her for going out and running as well as she did,” Kimball said. “She’s won every 3,200 race she’s ever run. That (1,600) is just a little tougher for her.”

The Wolverines’ boys 4x100-meter relay team finished eighth in the finals in 45.17 seconds and sixth in Friday’s 4x200-meter relay in 1:33.06.
