Math doesn’t add up for DHS swimming

Demons return home rather than wait for alternate possibilities

The wait wasn’t worth it.

Durango High School’s boys swim team decided in a team meeting to head home instead of waiting through Saturday’s finals at the Colorado HIgh School Activities Association Class 4A State Championships in Fort Collins to see if one of their alternates could sneak in.

“There was absolutely no guarantee we were going to get in,” DHS head coach Tom Joyner said. “In club swimming and USA swimming, theoretically, you have to scratch prior to finals if you’re not going to show up; in high school, you don’t have to.”

DHS senior Josh Miller was the No. 17 finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke and was the first alternate, while Durango’s 400-yard freestyle relay was 18th and the second alternate.

“We would have had our swimmer up their waiting until the start to be called up there, possibly,” Joyner said. “The numbers didn’t add up for us. We’re disappointed. We would have liked to had guaranteed spots in the finals. It was a fast meet with fast swims.

“Everyone was satisfied with their swims, and I was satisfied with their swims.”
