Let the battle be joined.
For 27 years, TABOR has been a leash that voters put on legislators, inhibiting their ability to go to Denver and raise our taxes to pay for anything from health care to massive roads construction.
Democrats who want it repealed have a good argument: We elect legislators to make these kinds of decisions in our stead. That is practical and democratic. And besides, they say, this leash is tugging at our necks and keeping us from doing great, expensive things. Ouch.
TABOR’s Republican defenders say that without it, who knows what kind of bankrupting mischief liberals would have achieved by now whenever they had majorities in both state houses, as they do now. Stay, dog.
We are so used to TABOR that we are afraid removing it would be like playing tennis with the net down. And we suspect that if you asked voters the question today, repealing TABOR would go down to crushing defeat.
Democrats have their work cut out for them. We look forward to strong, wise and creative arguments.
