Update: Power back on in La Plata County

Some customers in Bodo Park, west La Plata County were without power for an hour
Lightning strikes above Smelter Mountain Wednesday evening as captured by Herald reader Kip Wing from The Balcony. A strong storm cell moving through the region caused power outages for some LPEA customers, but power was soon restored.

A significant storm cell moving through the region Wednesday night caused power outages in the Bodo Industrial Park area and west La Plata County, which included service to the communication towers on Smelter Mountain, according to a news release from La Plata Electric Association.

LPEA crews restored power at 9:45 p.m., the release said. LPEA said no damage was caused to its system, but a lightning surge triggered circuits to open and power was cut as a preventative measure. Following inspection, the circuits were re-energized.

The outages were reported at about 8:23 p.m. and approximately 37 customers were without power.
