Man attempts to rob Subway in Durango; remains on the loose

Police say they have a suspect, but no arrests made

A man suspected of attempting to rob a Subway sandwich shop Wednesday evening on north Main Avenue – an incident that sparked an hourslong search in north Durango – remained on the loose Thursday.

The Durango Police Department said it has identified a suspect, but it did not release the man’s name Thursday. No arrest had been made as of 8 p.m. Thursday.

The man walked into the Subway at 2101 Main Ave. around 9:55 p.m. and demanded money from an employee, said Police Chief Kamran Afzal. While the man did not brandish a weapon, Afzal said he claimed to be armed.

Police enlisted the help of a canine to search for the man, but the dog lost a scent, Afzal said. Exactly how long officers searched was unclear, Afzal said. He said officers were able to obtain identifying information and believe they have identified a suspect.

He said police have no reason to believe the public is at any risk.

The Subway on Main Avenue could not be reached for comment Thursday morning.
