100 years ago: “Coincident with the marriage notice of George Brawner, a prominent and active miner of the La Platas and the principal owner of the Copper Hill Mine, it is reported that the big copper mine will be reopened for business within a short time. ‘Got to have more money now,’ George is reported to have admitted.”
75 years ago: “The Spanish Trails Fiesta parade proved to be a ‘thing of beauty and joy to behold’ – everything that advance reports had indicated it would be. ... The floats on a ‘story book’ theme were beautifully constructed, yet the watchers could easily pick out the characters in fairy tales or other stories that were represented.”
50 years ago: “William W. Downs, deputy district attorney, reports juvenile delinquency charges were to be filed against two Ignacio boys, ages 12 and 13, as a result of a fire which destroyed a Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad bridge about a mile south of Ignacio. The 80-foot bridge was made of creosoted timber and crossed an arroyo. ... It will take about 10 days for the railroad to replace the bridge.”
25 years ago: “What is Purgatory-Durango Ski Corp. doing for the World Mountain Bike Championships? More than most folks realize. A lot more. Purgatory, as a gold sponsor, has already spent thousands of dollars for September’s international competition, and Purgatory’s responsibilities will continue long after the cyclists and crowds go home.”
