Letter: Trump’s vitriolic behavior exacerbated divisions

With all due respect, I have to take exception to Dennis Pierce’s contention in his letter of Jan. 2 that “progressives never accepted the election of Trump and most conservatives I know ... are ready to move on.”

He must not know many conservatives in the U.S. government.

Despite winning the popular vote and losing the electoral vote in several swing states by fractions, much less than Biden’s margin of victory, Hillary Clinton conceded the morning after the election and the transition began immediately. She and Bill and the Obamas dutifully attended the inauguration.

By comparison, Trump and many of his sycophants have behaved like kindergartners having a toy taken away. He has indicated he will not attend the inauguration, breaking a 100-plus-year tradition of courtesy. I am not saying progressives haven’t poured some gasoline as well, but as far as I can see, Trump’s behavior, vitriol, lack of professional courtesy and downright nastiness have gone a long way to exacerbate the divisions in our country.
