The economy has been hit hard this summer because of the fires. Silverton has been especially affected because of the closure of U.S. Highway 550, and the train stoppage. Now that the (San Juan) National Forest has closed, the number of Silverton’s off-road campers will be down.
Silverton is a lovely and unique small town with a rich history. As their neighbors to the south, I would like to encourage people of Durango to consider supporting Silverton this summer by taking out-of-town visitors there, having a lunch or dinner, taking the afternoon to shop and visiting their historic cemetery, museums, courthouse and jail. There may be new things to see since your last visit. Consider having a fun day in Silverton, while supporting your neighbors.
