Bank robbery suspect caught near Hesperus

Man leads law enforcement on chase from Aztec

A man suspected of robbing a bank and leading police on a chase across the New Mexico line, from Aztec to just south of Hesperus, was arrested Thursday in La Plata County.

The suspect, who had not been identified as of 4:15 p.m., was being interviewed Thursday afternoon by the FBI. He is suspected of robbing Four Corners Community Bank in Aztec, said Frank Fisher, spokesman with the FBI in Albuquerque.

The suspect, driving a tan sedan, approached the state line about 2:20 p.m., which is when the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office was asked to assist with the pursuit, said sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender.

Deputies deployed spike strips near mile marker 22, about a mile south of Hesperus, he said. The suspect stopped just short of the spike strips and surrendered, Bender said.

No further information was available Thursday evening.
