Possibilities abound in pigtail play-in

Bayfield can end losing skid in league tournament
Bayfield senior Jaida Ross will do her best to get the Wolverines past the Monte Vista Pirates in the Intermountain League Tournament pigtail play-in game Tuesday night in Bayfield. Ross is averaging nearly 12 points and more than seven rebounds per game this season.

One win can change everything.

The Bayfield High School girls basketball team has struggled in recent weeks. On a three-game losing skid and losers of six consecutive Intermountain League games, the Wolverines (6-11, 1-7 IML) can put it all behind them with a win Tuesday against the Monte Vista Pirates (7-11, 1-7 IML).

The two teams split their regular-season matchups, the only wins for either team in IML play. The Wolverines beat the Pirates 47-31 in Bayfield before losing to the Pirates 51-40 in Monte Vista.

The rubber match will be played in the IML Tournament pigtail play-in game at 6 p.m. Tuesday at BHS.

The Wolverines enter the game averaging 42.3 points per game on 35-percent shooting from the field. Monte Vista averages just 39 points per game on 31-percent shooting.

Senior Jaida Ross is Bayfield’s leader this season with just less than 12 points per game. She also grabs an average of more than seven rebounds per game while leading the team with an average of two steals per game.

Bayfield also will rely on senior Haley Clarke, who is averaging eight points per contest.

Sophomore Terrise Sanchez leads the Pirate offense with 10.6 points per game. She also is highly active on defense, averaging more than six rebounds per game and more than three steals per game.
