My first impression of Durango was a beautiful green space close to downtown. What a special community this must be to have saved such a commercially valuable property!
For 20 years since, I have held my breath as Buckley Park has mostly withstood efforts to make it into a “real” city park with structures, sidewalks and even parking slots. Seemingly overnight, there arose an overbearing, front-and-center bench-type structure that needed approval from nobody.
Maybe if we renamed this space Tranquillity Park, what’s left of its uniqueness could be saved.
I love seeing a preschool class under a tree, little backpacks and all. Then there are the adults on lunch hour sitting in the grass relaxing or reading a book.
With the changes that are coming, I hope our city leaders will preserve this side of Buckley Park.
