100 years ago: The racing program for the Fourth of July, promises to be the best ever held on the local track. Twenty-five horses are now in daily practice on the course, and the records made in past events are certain to be lowered.
75 years ago: A Jones & Peterson Funeral Home advertisement read, People of Durango have reason to take pride in the spot dedicated to its City of the Dead. We have all helped in the beautifying of Greenmount and we should continue to care for it ... We may each do his or her part in perpetuating ones own memories and contributing to the beauty of the whole by placing appropriate plantings and markers in our plots.
50 years ago: School District 9-R put out a call for students and adults to enroll in the summer beginning typist course being offered. School officials said only nine have enrolled for the course.
25 years ago: Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College was decorated by 25 colorful panels created by Boulder artist George Peters. The Legislature allocates 1 percent of the cost of construction of a state building to art enhancement. Peters was paid $18,500 for the contract. The building also will get a sculpture of a Navajo blanket that will be hung from the ceiling as part of the art project.
