If there was any doubt about why Durango glass masters Bengt Hokanson and Trefny Dix were chosen as the featured artists for this weekend’s Home & Ranch Show at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, their absence can serve as their résumé.
“It’s an incredible honor, and if it was any other week of the year,” they’d be at the home show, Dix said Tuesday before joining her husband in Washington, D.C., for the 31st annual Smithsonian Craft Show. The opening reception was Wednesday and the invitation-only exhibit in Washington, like the Home & Ranch show, will continue through Sunday.
Hokanson and Dix were among 121 artists nationwide who were invited to the prestigious juried show, which is put on every year by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee. The couple has been producing award-winning and commercially successful glass art for almost 20 years from New Orleans to New York to Durango. Dix said it is that longevity and exposure that resulted in the Smithsonian honor.
In their stead, Josh Steinlauf, owner of Azul Gallery, will represent Hokanson and Dix at the two-day Home & Ranch Show. The Main Avenue gallery is the local retail outlet for Hokanson Dix Glass, and the artists also will be Azul’s featured artists May 10 for the Spring Gallery Walk.
