Durango girls split in Pueblo

A split gave Durango High School girls basketball a .500 weekend to open the season at the Hornet Holiday Tournament on Saturday in Pueblo.

DHS (2-2) got past Cañon City 49-40 in the first game of the day before falling 54-30 to Greeley Central to wrap the tournament.

Katie Wiegert powered the Demons in the early victory, scoring 21 points to go with 12 from Katrina Chandler.

“She got open looks and just knocked them down,” DHS head coach Nancy Smith said of Wiegert, who provided a much-needed offensive lift to a Durango squad playing without four regulars.

Smith said the Cañon City game was a bit of a benchmark after falling to the Tigers 61-38 at the same tournament a season ago.

“Last year, they beat us pretty handily, so to come back this year and play them, just handle the ball well, and the girls had great defensive intensity,” Smith said.

The nightcap didn’t go quite as well as the Demons’ offense sputtered.

Chandler led the way with eight points, while Wiegert and Taylor Edwards each had six points for DHS.

“Offensively, we just had trouble hitting buckets. Everybody was exhausted,” Smith said.

DHS next will play the Palisade Tournament, starting Friday.
