Four out of the five Durango Youth American Football League teams picked up victories last weekend in Week 2 after a 2-3 start Week 1:
The third-grade Demons raced by the Shiprock Chieftains 54-0.
Beau Brunson, Tagert Bardin and Zach Haber all ran for two touchdowns on the day, while Brunson and Bardin both converted two extra points. Rowan Holiday also scored for the Demons.
Josh Bates blew by the Chieftains’ offensive line for four sacks. Jerich Daruch, Vince Draper and Nate Pinto all picked up a sack, as well.
The Demons’ next will play against the Farmington Bulldawgs at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.
The fourth-grade Demons lost 26-6 against the Farmington Panthers after opening the year with a win against the Farmington Gators.
Emmett Thompson scored Durango’s only touchdown on an interception return.
The Demons will play the Aztec Longhorns at 9 a.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.
The fifth-grade Demons won their second consecutive game, defeating conference foe Bayfield 39-0.
Jordan Wolverton was all over the field for the Demons, scoring two rushing touchdowns and bringing the second half’s opening kickoff 63 yards back for the score.
Gage Mestas also ran for two touchdowns, while Cal Walsh scored a rushing touchdown and had five tackles. Ty Martinez made four tackles for Durango and collected an interception.
Bayfield only picked up three first downs against the Demons’ stingy defense.
Durango will look to extend its winning streak against the Farmington Panthers on Saturday at Miller Middle School.
Both sixth-grade Demons teams bounced back from their season-opening losses with wins: The Demons Red beat the Aztec Raptors 19-9; while the Demons White picked up a 34-0 victory against Pagosa Springs.
The Red won behind rushing touchdowns from Liam Farkas, Reed Cooksey and Riley Cooksey.
The Red will play Kirtland at 3 p.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.
Everett Howland scored three touchdown runs in the first half for the White, with his longest coming from 50 yards out. Jacob Lakey plunged a touchdown in from 10 yards out, and Joe Arnwine threw a 22-yard scoring pass to Tim Miller in the second half of their victory.
The White will play a road game against Bayfield at 9 a.m. Saturday.
