The NFL Players Association suspended NFL agent Marty Magid for six months and fined him $25,000 for his role in the events that led to the fax faux pas between defensive end Elvis Dumervil and the Denver Broncos in March.
In a release announcing Magid’s suspension, the NFLPA said it’s Committee on Agent Regulation and Discipline found Magid committed “actions that adversely impact his ability to serve as a Certified Contract Advisor.”
The Broncos, Magid and Dumervil had reached agreement on a new contract for Dumervil in March that included a $4-million pay cut just before a deadline that would have guaranteed Dumervil’s scheduled salary of $12 million.
But a series of complications involving the email and fax transmissions of the contract documents between the Broncos’ offices in Englewood, Magid’s office in Philadelphia and Dumervil’s home in Miami led to the Broncos releasing Dumervil when a signed contract wasn’t delivered on time.
Dumervil fired Magid days later, hired NFL power agent Tom Condon and signed with the Baltimore Ravens later in March.
Phone and email messages for Magid have not been returned.
Magid told USA TODAY Sports in March that the late transmission of the faxed documents was the Broncos’ fault because of a late change to the contract terms. The Broncos meanwhile said Magid and Dumervil missed multiple deadlines to agree to the new deal and had no choice but to release Dumervil.
Though the Broncos resumed contract negotiations with Dumervil and Condon, Dumervil elected to sign with the Ravens instead. Dumervil made his Ravens’ debut Sept. 5 in Denver against his former team.
Dumervil, who signed with Magid after his former agent, Gary Wichard, died in 2011, was Magid’s most high-profile client. Wichard negotiated Dumervil’s six-year, $61.5-million contract with the Broncos in 2010, the year after Dumervil led the NFL in sacks with 17.
Magid’s current list of NFL clients includes Baltimore running back Bernard Pierce, Indianapolis cornerback Cassius Vaughn and New York Giants cornerback Trumaine McBride.
