Unitarian recital series continues

The third presentation in the 2014-15 Recital Series at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will feature the Mangold Duo with Bonnie Mangold, cello, and Marilyn Mangold Garst, piano at 7 p.m. March 27 at the fellowship, 419 San Juan Drive.

The program comprises music of Vivaldi, Debussy, Barber and Brahms.

Mangold studied at the Juilliard School of Music with famed cellist Zara Nelsova and later with William Pleeth in London. For three years, she was principal cellist of the National Orchestra of Colombia, in Bogotá, before joining the Utah Symphony cello section.

Garst moved to Durango in 2005 after a 25-year tenure at The George Washington University as professor of piano, harpsichord and keyboard ensembles. She was the pianist in the GWU Faculty Trio and served as Keyboard Studies Coordinator. Garst is Music Director for the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and founded this Recital Series.

Singers, songwriters sought for festival

The South Fork Music Association is seeking singer/songwriters for its third annual Singer/Songwriter Competition, which will take place June 20 during its second annual Summer Soul-Stice Festival.

Singer/songwriters and bands of any genre, performing their own original music, are encouraged to participate. Interested musicians should email a downloadable sample, YouTube link, social-media page or website where their music can be heard to Heather Meyer at meyerhd@hotmail.com. Submissions should be submitted no later than May 24. Musicians and bands should be able to perform two to three of their own original songs during the competition, and the winning musician should be able to perform 60-90 minutes of music during Rhythms on the Rio on Aug. 8.

The winner of the singer/songwriter competition will receive a paid slot opening the 10th annual Rhythms on the Rio Music Festival on Aug. 8.
