Wind causes rolling power outages in Southwest Colorado

Trees were blowing into lines

Herald Staff Writer

Strong winds caused rolling power outages across La Plata County Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve had quite a few trees in the line,” said Justin Talbot, manager of operations for La Plata Electric Association.

About 350 homes total were affected between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. across La Plata and Archuleta counties, according to an LPEA news release.

The largest outage was in the Cascade Village Area north of Durango, where about 250 people were left without power for about an hour, Talbot said.

Crews believe the outage near Cascade was related to trees blowing into power lines, but they didn’t find any downed trees, he said.

About 6:30 p.m., LPEA crews were still working to restore power to 38 homes in the Purgatory Area and about 60 near Pagosa Springs.

More large outages were not likely Saturday night, Talbot said.

“It should be calming down,” he said.

The National Weather Service predicted winds between 5 to 10 miles an hour overnight.
