100 years ago: ANIMAS VALLEY – “Sam Frizell of Falls Creek was down over New Year’s getting acquainted with his family at the Baker ranch where Mrs. Frizell is living, so that the children can have the advantage of the high school at Trimble.”

75 years ago: “Attendance is improved in Durango High and Smiley Junior High schools with the resumption of school after the holidays.”

50 years ago: “Gov. John Love will be the main speaker at the Purgatory dedication and will break a bottle of champagne on the first chair of the lift to christen the ski area. ... Skiing will be open and Love has indicated he hopes to ski.”

25 years ago: “Members of the 928th Medical Company are being deployed to Saudi Arabia this afternoon as part of Operation Desert Shield. The former National Guard ambulance company was based in Cortez, with a detachment in Durango, until it was ‘federalized’ Nov. 25. The unit, with an authorized strength of 107 soldiers, will depart from Peterson Air Force Base near Colorado Springs via commercial aircraft.”
