Dominic Thiem of Austria lost to No. 1 seed and four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday at Roland Garros in Paris, France, in the second round of the French Open. Nadal is the only man with eight major titles from the same Grand Slam tournament, yet the humble champion thinks highly of Thiem, whom he called the future of the sport. “A generation is walking away, and others will replace us,” Nadal said. “It will not come overnight, but it will come.”
