Durango airport also needs control tower

As a seasonal resident and frequent traveler out of Durango, I have tried to keep abreast of developments, and I’m encouraged to see support for a new airport.

There are good arguments from all sides on funding alternatives, and the negatives are fairly clear: a general sales tax is somewhat regressive; it is not clear exactly how much tourism contributes; property taxes let the out-of-towners off the hook; and user fees would be egregious to make up the local funding not covered by the Federal Aviation Administration’s significant contribution.

My personal preference would be property taxes, which are progressive and easily identifiable as a federal income tax withholding deduction, but perhaps some combination of two, or all three, would work? We need this new airport for convenience, tourism and to support growth of our commercial business environment, which can create better-quality local jobs.

An important consideration not put forth is the need for an air-traffic control tower manned by ATC personnel. As a general-aviation pilot who has based a plane at Durango, there are safety considerations the general public may not be aware of.

Basically, we have an uncontrolled airport, which has seen significant growth since 1988. Apparently, early gas and oil development allowed Farmington to receive a control tower, but I believe our need now justifies an ATC-controlled airport. The many reasons supporting this view should be part of the information presented to gain voter approval.
