Fort Lewis College women’s golf takes 12th in Pueblo

Summer Vigil ties for 22nd

Summer Vigil was the highest finisher for the Fort Lewis College women’s golf team on Monday in the final round of the El Cheapo Classic in Pueblo.

With a final round score of 76, she tied for 22nd and helped the Skyhawks finish in 12th as a team. FLC shot a 68-over-par as a team and finished with a total score of 644.

Vigil shot a 76 both days, or 4-over-par, for a total of 152. She sank two birdies and had 11 pars during her final round.

St. Mary’s of Texas won the tournament with a 5-over-par overall and scored a 581, which was 11 shots better than West Texas A&M, which finished in second with a 16-over-par 592. St. Edward’s was four strokes behind in third and finished 20-over-par with a 596. Host Colorado State University-Pueblo was the highest finisher from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, as the ThunderWolves finished in fourth with a 24-over-par 600 through both days.

Paige Weiss of St. Mary’s edged fellow teammate Regina Gonzalez after Weiss finished with a 3-under-par and tallied a 141, while Gonzalez moved up four spots from Sunday to take second with a 2-under-par 142. Julia Baroth from University of Colorado-Colorado Springs was third with a 143, while CSU-Pueblo’s Courtney Ewing shot a 144 and Colorado Christian’s Faith Kilgore rounded out the top five with a 145.

The Skyhawks’ second-highest finisher was Isabella Martinez, who shot a 16-over-par and was 10-over on Monday with an 82. Her two-day total was 160, after she shot a 78 on Sunday. She tied for 46th. Sophie Schwartz was third for FLC and shot an 83 both days for a 166 and tied for 58th.

Judith Camacho was fourth for Fort Lewis and was just two strokes behind Schwartz with a 168 and tied for 64th. Camacho had 11 pars during the final round and shot an 85 and was two shots better on Monday with an 83, or an 11-over-par. Shelby Hindes tied for 73rd overall and was fifth for FLC with a 32-over-par and tallied a 176 after she shot an 83 and a 93 on Monday.

The Skyhawks tallied 14 birdies for both rounds. Vigil led the team in scoring in both par-three (3.13) and par-four (4.35) and had the most pars (21) and birdies (5).

Fort Lewis will hit the road again next week to compete in the Mustang Intercollegiate, hosted by Western New Mexico, April 4-6 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
