The Liberty School announces programs

The Liberty School, on the second floor of 215 E. 12th St., will offer these programs:

The school’s October Visitors Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. Participants will learn more about the school’s programs for dyslexic, gifted and twice-exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) students.

Tickets for the Dyslexic Hall of Fame are available. The event, which includes a silent auction, dinner and an induction ceremony, will take place Nov. 2 at the Strater Hotel. Tickets may be purchased at thelibertyschool.org or call 385-4834. The successful dyslexics to be honored are Sen. Michael Bennett, Durango Chief of Police Jim Spratlen, and BP employee Brady Pulek.

Testing for signs of dyslexia and giftedness are being scheduled for Oct. 26. The testing is sponsored by Durango’s rotary clubs. For more information, call 385-4834.

Florida Mesa to host Harvest Carnival

The annual Harvest Carnival at Florida Mesa Elementary School, 216 Colorado Highway 172, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The carnival will include games such as pumpkin bowling, dart throw, football toss, duck dip and others. Activities will include the spooky maze, cakewalk, cupcake walk, face painting, fortune-teller and wheel of fortune. Participants can enter to win a basket filled with more than $600 in donated items. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes. Food will be served with treats such as snow cones, cotton candy, and popcorn will be available. Money raised will support the school’s technology needs.

Comedy, music night to support Grace

“Pickin’ & Grinnin’: An Evening of Comedy and Music to Support Grace Preparatory Academy” will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Irish Embassy Pub, 900 Main Ave.

The 6 Dollar String Band will play and Durango Dot Comedy will perform. The cost is $10. Participants will have an opportunity to win one of several outdoor gear adventure packages.

At 8 a.m. Friday, a representative from Hillsdale College will speak to the school.

Animas High School announces programs

Animas High School will host these programs:

Ashley Carruth’s 11th-grade humanities class will host “Morality and Politics of Justice Coffee House Community Dialogues” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at Durango Joe’s, 1125 South Camino del Rio, and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Durango Joe’s, 732 E. College Drive. Students will discuss their proposals for how the government should resolve various political issues, not based on what Democrats or Republicans espouse, but based on what is morally and politically just.

The Fall Friendraiser will take place Nov. 6. This is the school’s annual parent and community event sponsored by community businesses and hosted at the Henry Strater Theatre. To RSVP, email fundraising@animashighschool.com.

Continuing education available at FLC

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education program will offer these classes:

“True Success II: Mapping Your Path to Success” will be taught by Dr. Mark Fallon-Cyr and social worker Maureen Fallon-Cyr for seven Tuesday evenings from Oct. 22 to Dec. 10. This class has a prerequisite, “True Success: Introducing a New Vision,” taught this fall or last spring. In this course, participants will map and explore strengths and weaknesses to support the development of proficiency and personal and social competence. The cost $159 per person.

“Wines: Old World/New World,” “Wines of South America,” and “Wines of Italy” will be offered by Alan Cuenca, owner of Put a Cork in It, from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 23, 30 and Nov. 6, respectively. Participants will learn about the historical overview of each wine group as well as taste several wines. Wine, crackers, cheese and accoutrements are included in the cost. The cost is $39 per class.

“Salt: The Rock that Rocks the World,” taught by Mary Meredith, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays Nov. 2, 9 and 16. The fee is $74 and includes handouts and salt samples. This course will primarily explore the role of salt in history and its many uses throughout time.

Life-Long lecture to address the piano

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “History of the Piano (1700-Present) with Illustrations in Sound” by Marilyn Garst at 7 p.m. Thursday in Roshong Recital Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Garst will discuss the evolution of instrument design and performance during the past 300 years, starting with the harpsichord and progressing to fortepiano and leading to the modern piano as exists today.

Garst, retired professor of piano, harpsichord and keyboard ensembles at George Washington University and current music director for the Durango Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will share insights and musical illustrations.

Education advisory committee to meet

The Special Education Advisory Committee invites parents, educators, and community members to learn about advocating for students with special needs in the school system.

9-R board candidate forum to be held

The Durango School District 9-R School Board has five open seats for the upcoming election, in Director District’s B, C, E, F and G.

People can meet the candidates and hear more information about their platforms from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Durango City Hall, 949 East Second Ave.

State, local ballot issues to be discussed

Durango School District 9-R state and local ballot issues will be discussed, including 3A, which would reduce the size of the Durango District Board of Education, and Amendment 66, the state school-finance act, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Durango City Hall, 949 East Second Ave.

Experts will discuss the pros and cons of the new measures.

Big Picture to host haunted house, dinner

Big Picture High School will present its second annual Haunted House and Chili Dinner from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and 31 at 215 E. 12th St.

The cost is $3 for students, $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Proceeds benefit Big Picture High School student projects. Children 9 and older are welcome.

Escalante school to host run, walk

The third annual Escalante 5K Fun Run/Walk will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane.

Registration will begin at 9:15 a.m. with the 5K run/walk along the Animas River Trail starting at 10 a.m.

Immediately after the event, there will be food, music, awards and prize drawings. This is a timed event, and there will be awards for the top male and female finishers as well as top male and female finishers in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Everyone registered in the event will be entered in the drawings. All proceeds will go toward funding the new Escalante marquee sign.

Park Elementary to host Pumpkin Patch festival

Park Elementary School will host its annual fundraiser, the Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday.

The school will have hundreds of pumpkins for sale in the learning preserve. There will be trick-or-treating, food and games.

Big Picture High School to host blood drive

Durango Big Picture High School will conduct a blood drive in conjunction with United Blood Services from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. Nov. 5.

DHS to present Shakespeare play

Durango High School Theater will present William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7 p.m. Friday at the DHS Auditorium. Tickets will be available at the door.

Sunnyside to host Halloween carnival

The annual Sunnyside Elementary School Halloween Carnival and Silent Auction will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25.

For admission, participants are asked to bring a book or baked good per family. Game tickets will be sold at the door for 25 cents each. The event will feature these activities: a haunted house, book walk, Plinko, bingo, bouncy house, dark dance and more. Fall foods and desserts will be on sale. There also will be a silent auction and a chance to win one of seven family-sized gift baskets. All proceeds will go to Sunnyside’s reading and computing programs.

Needham to host garden potluck Sunday

Needham Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization will host a Fall Garden Potluck from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Participants should bring work gloves and a dish to share. There will be a pumpkin activity for the students and their families.

Happy Hour Spanish group now available

Happy Hour Spanish, new, small-group, conversational Spanish classes with Liza Tregillus, is now available. Tregillus has taught all levels of Spanish students from preschool through college.

Classes will begin next week. Daytime Spanish for home-school and youth groups also is available.
