Durango’s 2016 New Year’s baby arrives

Lilliana Christine Corbin weighs 8 pounds, 7 ounces

Despite an evening delivery, Lilliana Christine Corbin was the first baby to arrive in Durango in 2016.

Born at 6:45 p.m. Jan. 1, Lilliana weighs 8 pounds, 7 ounces and is 20.5 inches long. Her initial due date was Jan. 31, so on New Year’s Day, parents Joseph and Amanda Corbin of Aztec got an early surprise.

The couple spent a mild New Year’s Eve going to dinner, and then Amanda went into labor at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The delivery at Mercy Regional Medical Center was “fast and furious,” she said, but happened without incident.

“I had been taking Zumba classes, eating spicy food, all the old tricks you hear will speed up the process,” Amanda said while holding her newborn in the hospital room alongside her husband, Joseph, and the couple’s son.

“Lily” was a name Joseph said he had liked for a long time, and Amanda threw in the “ana” for a little extra flair.

Older brother Landon, 8, admitted he was “excited” to have a new baby sister and had already held her several times that day. He’s looking forward to teaching Lilliana how to play Minecraft, but he will be making it clear to her whose property is whose.

“I’m going to teach her not to mess with my Legos,” he said.

Lilliana was just the New Year’s gift Joseph was hoping for.

“I’ve just always wanted a girl,” he said.

Amanda added, “I didn’t mind if it was a boy or girl either way, but he’s actually wanted to have a girl since high school.”

Lilliana was the first but not the only baby born on the first day of 2016. Another girl was welcomed to the world at 10:15 p.m.

Last year, a Durango baby, also a girl, was born 2 minutes into the new year. She was Durango’s first baby of 2015, but also the first born in 2015 in the entire state of Colorado.

There were 942 total babies born in Durango in 2015.
