Councilors clear hotel plan

A new hotel is planned along U.S. Highway 550/160 between Allen Theaters and the Animas River

The Durango City Council on Tuesday approved a plan to build a 100-unit hotel along U.S. Highway 550/160 between Allen Theaters and the Animas River.

Premier Hospitality plans to start construction on the Springhill Suites by Marriott in spring.

It will be three stories, and the design will mirror the nearby Homewood Suites and the La Quinta Inn.

“We think it’s going to be a nice addition to the community,” Planner Craig Roser said.

Premier Hospitality was interested in building a new hotel because occupancy rates for hotels and motels in town are consistently high, the CEO of the company said previously in an interview.

Some minor adjustments to the plans for the hotel will come because after of a request in a letter from the Durango Mall’s lawyer asking to protect an easement, Roser said.
