Ignacio wrestling wins a dual tiebreaker

Appenzeller, Robbins win matches

Scoring first ended up resulting in a win for the Ignacio wrestling team Thursday night in Dolores.

The Ignacio High School wrestling team ended up in a tie with Dolores in a dual-meet. To decide the team-score winner, a tiebreaker was put into place. To determine a winner, it came down to which team scored first the most times. In the four matches wrestled, the Bobcats scored first three times, giving IHS a 31-30 dual-meet win.

“It’s hard to get excited about when you only wrestle four matches,” IHS head coach Jordan Larsen said. “I’ve never had a dual come down to the third or fourth tiebreaker criteria, but it was a quick dual and we ended up taking it.”

Ignacio earned two wins, as Ethan Appenzeller earned six points with a pin victory at 152 pounds. He finished off his opponent with 8 seconds remaining in the second period.

Stocker Robbins earned a pin of his own at 132 pounds. He finished his opponent with less than 20 seconds remaining in the first period.

“They looked good and wrestled well,” Larsen said. “We’re gearing up for Saturday. That’s the focus this week. It was good to get a few pre-tournament matches in, and we’re hoping to see the tough teams this weekend and get some good matches. The guys are ready.”

IHS will visit Farmington for the Piedra Vista tournament Saturday.
