Fort Lewis College football coach Ed Rifilato is set to face his alma mater. More importantly, it’s senior day for the Skyhawks.
A hearty class of 18 seniors who helped turn the Skyhawks’ program around over the last four years will be honored Saturday, when FLC hosts winless New Mexico Highlands at noon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field on the FLC campus.
FLC (3-6, 2-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) is only 1-4 at home this season but will have a chance to win its third consecutive game when they take on the Cowboys (0-9, 0-8 RMAC).
The Skyhawks’ offense has posted more than 50 points in each of the last two wins, including a 53-52 overtime thriller last week at South Dakota Mines. The team will have another great shot at eclipsing 50 points this week, as the Cowboys allow an average of 56.3 points per game, including 87 last week against Colorado Mesa.
Running backs Drake Griffin and PJ Hall along with sophomore quarterback Bo Coleman have helped the Skyhawks lead the conference in rushing at 253.9 yards per game. That has helped FLC also lead the RMAC in time of possession.
The Skyhawks’ defense ranks in four defensive categories, and they will have a chance to keep improving those numbers Saturday.
