It only took 45 minutes for the Bayfield High School boys soccer team to score this season after the Wolverines didn’t find the back of the net until the fourth game of the year last season.
BHS freshman Colton Fine chipped a shot over the keeper from the top of the 18-yard box after receiving the ball off of a free kick.
BHS (0-1, 0-1 3A Region 5) lost the game 5-1 to Crested Butte on Saturday on the road but only trailed 1-0 at halftime off of a Crested Butte penalty kick.
Bayfield started seven freshmen.
“It was kind of a turning point, I felt, for the program,” BHS head coach Dave Foster said. “The confidence the boys have knowing they can compete for a first half; they’re building confidence in knowing that they’re getting better.”
Kaleb Schultz scored two goals for Crested Butte (2-0, 1-0 Region 5), while Noah Dumas, Sam Reaman and Patrick Seifert also scored.
BHS keeper Ben Young made seven saves.
“He always seems to play well at Crested Butte,” Foster said.
The Wolverines had seven total shots in the game.
They were supposed to open Tuesday against Center, but Center didn’t have enough players to field a team.
BHS lost 10-0 at Crested Butte last season.
The Wolverines next will play Montezuma-Cortez at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Cortez.
Their home opener is against Durango High School’s junior varsity squad at 5 p.m. Friday at Wolverine Country Stadium.
“We’re definitely gonna work on creating some more spaces and making those runs off the ball,” Foster said. “We need to continue to build off what we did (Saturday) and take all the little positives.”
