Quit demonizing Planned Parenthood

Conservatives’ bitter hatred of Planned Parenthood is perplexing. No organization in America today does more to reduce the incidence of abortion than Planned Parenthood. Copious sex-ed in schools combined with counseling and family planning available from Planned Parenthood reduces the number of abortions performed in America by a factor of 10 or more as well as providing valuable women’s health services.

So why the maniacal hatred of Planned Parenthood by letter-writers like Robert Goodrich (Herald, Oct. 2) who refers to the organization as “barbaric and butchering?” Because embryonic tissue that would otherwise go in an incinerator or dumpster was instead diverted to valuable medical research? Tissue which is discarded “by God” in the form of a miscarriage in more than 10 percent of all pregnancies?

No one, neither the Catholic Church with it’s “just say no” approach to sex nor Bristol Palin does more to reduce the incidence of abortion in America than Planned Parenthood. Any Christian fundamentalist or conservative with an ounce of logic would support Planned Parenthood rather than calling for its destruction.

Quit demonizing the very organization that prevents far more abortions than it will ever perform!
