Demons’ goal-scoring machine scores 5 more in victory

It took 40 minutes, but the Demons once again cranked up the goal-scoring machine Saturday.

The Durango High School boys soccer team (8-2-1, 3-1 Southwestern League) continued its strong season with a 5-0 win Saturday morning at Grand Junction (2-7, 1-3 SWL).

One day earlier, the Demons earned a 3-0 win at Grand Junction Central.

“Grand Junction and Montrose are tough places to win games. When you get the opportunity to come up here and go 2-0 in Grand Junction before you head home for a four-game stretch, it’s always a great accomplishment,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said.

DHS freshman Elijah Fenton scored two goals Saturday after he scored one Friday. He now has 11 goals on the season, and he leads the SWL in goals and points (27).

DHS junior Aidan Aggeler and Vance Bulen both scored a goal, and senior Evan Schertz added another for the Demons.

Tony Williams, a senior captain in the midfield for the Demons, was involved in the goals again to remain at the top of the pack in Class 4A when it comes to assists. He had one assist Saturday after he scored a goal and delivered one assist Friday. He now has 11 assists this season.

“(Fenton) has been a big standout for us, really big,” Parker said. “But it has been a team collective. Without Bulen and Williams and the high pressure they generate on the opponents, Eli wouldn’t have the accolades at this point in time. Those three all make the attack what it is.”

DHS led just 1-0 at halftime Saturday. Parker said the key to the four second-half goals was his team playing faster.

“We had to make an adjustment on where to find channels to get in behind the defense. We had plenty of opportunities but didn’t finish in the first half,” Parker said. “When we got in that last offensive third, we just needed to play a little quicker to open it up a bit.”

DHS will play four consecutive home games; those games won’t come for more than a week, though:

The Demons will host Fruita Monument on Oct. 3 at the Riverview Sports Complex.

The Demons then will have a big revenge game against Montrose on Oct. 4 at Dirks Field on the Fort Lewis College campus. Montrose (7-1-0, 4-0 SWL) is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, and Durango is No. 7. The Indians beat the Demons 1-0 Sept. 12 in Montrose.

“The boys are super-excited to play at home and show all the hard work we’ve shown to the rest of the state,” Parker said. “We are looking forward to more family, fans and friends in the stands, and we want to go 4-0 during this stand.”
