Trails 2000 will host “A Hike to Gudy’s for Gudy” to honor the “Mother of the Colorado Trail,” Gudrun “Gudy” Gaskill, at 4 p.m. Aug. 16.
The public is invited to pay tribute to Gaskill with a group hike or mountain bike ride from lower Junction Creek Trailhead to Gudy’s Rest, a distance of approximately 4 miles.
Gaskill, who passed away on July 14, is credited for making the 500-mile trail from Denver to Durango a reality.
From 1973 when the trail was conceived, Gaskill dedicated the next 43 years of her life to taking the trail from idea to reality as a trail builder and organizer. Gaskill was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 2002 and honored in Durango in March 2015.

As part of the 2016 Hot Spot Program, Leave No Trace worked with the San Juan Mountains Association and the San Juan National Forest from July 11 to 18 to analyze the Ice Lake Basin and its trailhead.
The group will give impact recommendations and develop a plan to begin education and outreach to minimize the impacts to the Ice Lake Basin and trailhead area before they become irreversible. The week’s activities included a workshop in Durango, installing a sign at the trailhead, a trail maintenance project and a backpacking trip into the basin for monitoring purposes.
